A Study Of City Development And Social Change In Modern Longjing (1883-1931)

This paper,which sets its researching time boundary with the period from 1883 to 1931,regards the modern Longjing City as its main research object.With the help of relevant multi-disciplinary theories together with the basic on historical facts,and then also with utilizing the methodologies that combining the longitudinally segmental discussions with the horizontally monographic studies,the paper firstly reviews the course of modernization and social change in Longjing City.Then it analyzes the developmental features of the city together with some influential facts of modernization,and finally ends up with proposing several suggestions about development of Longjing City.This paper could be divided into five chapters and may be organized as follows.The first chapter is mainly about the objective,significance and methodologies of this research and is also about definitions of some concepts together with current states about this topic in academic circles.The second chapter mainly views the natural and cultural conditions of founding city in Longjing area as well as its administrative divisions in the long river of history.Then,the third part of this paper chiefly talks about the embryonic period of modern Longjing City,i.e.the transitional period from the village to the city.A brief explanation about this transitional period may as follows.Under the circumstances of collapse of "forbidden policy",Qing government opened "Helong Valley",and with the promotion of superior natural conditions and bilateral trade between China and Korean peninsula,"Helong Valley"became more and more prosperous.Then during the period of oppression by Japanese Empire,Japan and China signed a treaty called " Jiandao Agreement",and Longjing became the commercial port as well as leased territory under this agreement.In addition,with the power of religion in this area,Longjing gradually began its era of modern urbanization.The fourth part,which is really important in this paper,is principally about the establishment and the development of modern Longjing City.The chapter mainly describes the external reasons about the development of modern Longjing City which financially as well as culturally became the center of modern "Jiandao" after the invasion of Japanese Empire which indirectly improved the commercial and industrial infrastructures by exerting its influences on political,economic and cultural areas of Longjing City.However,the absence of tangible urban planning during the urbanization of Longjing City also caused some urban problems like disorder of city layout as well as the ambiguity of functional divisions of city areas.Finally,the conclusion of this paper is reached in Chapter five,which also comes up with three features of city development and some constructive suggestions for the development of current Longjing City.
