With the pluralistic development of the society and gradual attention paid to fostering the students' characteristics and interests,more and more senior students prefer to choose the art universities or art majors.In recent years,their proportion is increasing among the examinees of the National College Entrance Examination.However,because it takes the art students too much time to learn and practise their speciality,they have less time than the normal students to learn the academic knowledge.Most art students have poor English bases and small vocabulary.But English vocabulary is the vital aspect in learning English.How to enlarge vocabulary has become the great challenge that the art students and their English teachers are faced with until now.But there have been few scholars researching English vocabulary teaching and learning for the art students.As an English teacher of the art students,the author thinks having a good understanding about the current situations of vocabulary teaching and learning for the art students,analyzing the existing problems and putting forward some countermeasures has the theoretical and practical significance for improving the quality of their English vocabulary teaching and learning.The study is aiming at answering the following two questions:(1)What are the existing problems of the art students in learning English vocabulary in Helin National Middle School?(2)What are the existing problems of the art students' English teachers in teaching English vocabulary in Helin National Middle School?In order to resolve the research questions,300 art students and five English teachers from Helin National Middle School were chosen as the research subjects.Questionnaires,interviews and classroom observation were employed together as the main research instruments.The data of valid collected questionnaires were analyzed by SPSS 17.0.The findings of this research are related to the art students and their teachers.The existing problems of the art students are as followings:(1)They lack interest and motivation to learning vocabulary.(2)They depend too much on their teachers,lacking learning capacities with self-reliance.(3)Their vocabulary learning strategies are traditional and useless.Meanwhile the existing problems of the teachers of the art students are as followings:(1)They have not changed the idea of "teachers-center".(2)The teaching materials are not used reasonably by them according to the art students' actual situations.(3)They work separately without cooperating with other teachers.(4)Their vocabulary teaching strategies are inappropriate.(5)The teachers have not adjusted or changed their teaching with the new requirements and changes of the National Matriculation English.Finally,according to the results,the related countermeasures are proposed to solve the problems listed above.
