English vocabulary is a foundation of English study, and one of the three major elements of the English language. English vocabulary is of such great importance that students spend a lot of time and energy on it. However, the result is not desirable. Thus vocabulary learning is considered to be a barrier and it is with such great difficulty that students learn English vocabulary. It is especially true for students who have just finished their junior high school and entered the senior high school. For students in this transitional period, a large vocabulary is what they first encounter and feel caught in. In addition, the new English Curriculum Standards for the senior high school makes great demands for the amount and the usages of vocabulary the students need to master. Concerning this, the present study focused on the situation of English word learning of the students in seniorl in No.6 Middle School, Ma'anshan. Through the questionnaires and interviews, the researcher analyzed the two questions.Ⅰ. What might be the problems of the students in senior 1 in their English vocabulary learning?Ⅱ. How can teachers help them to learn English words well? What are the strategies?The findings are:1. Some students have lost interest in learning English and have little confidence in themselves. English vocabulary learning has become a heavy burden for the students because of lack of the motivation to learn.2. Students pay far more attention to English grammar learning than the vocabulary learning. Students do not fully get involved in their vocabulary learning and they learn words just by rote-learning.3. Students are in urgent need of proper guidance in word learning strategies and scientific ways to learn words.With reference to the questions above, the researcher carried out this research in two classes.1. Firstly, great importance has been put on reducing students'anxieties in language learning and helping develop a positive attitude towards vocabulary learning.2. Secondly, students have been trained in learning and using vocabulary learning strategies.3. Meanwhile, effective teaching methods have been carefully selected and put into use in teaching to arouse the students' interest in vocabulary learning and enhance their learning.At the end of this research, the researcher analyzed and compared the results of the vocabulary tests and module tests. What has been done has obviously helped the students' vocabulary learning and their English grades have improved a lot as well.
