English is a quite essential international language and is a carrier of communication of technology, economy and culture around the world. There is no denying that English is playing an increasingly more important role in our daily lives and work. Vocabulary is the utmost element of language and it is a requirement for language learners. However, vocabulary is a common difficulty for English teachers and their students in high schools'teaching. How to improve vocabulary teaching and allow students to master vocabulary more effectively have been bothering English teachers all the time.Vocabulary teaching is in the whole process of English teaching. The amounts of vocabulary directly influence students'skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, etc. However, owing to many factors, there are many problems existing in vocabulary teaching in senior high schools. As a senior high school English teacher, I know how difficult and stressful in vocabulary teaching. Therefore, I am eager to find a specific way to combat this issue. This paper emphasizes on finding problems in teaching English vocabulary of high schools, searching for feasible and effective teaching strategies in order to enable students to master vocabulary happily, to increase their vocabulary. Finally, students can use their vocabulary reasonably.The first part of this study introduces reasons, backgrounds, goals and significance of researching this study. The second part is about the related concepts of vocabulary teaching, including vocabulary teaching, contents and principles of vocabulary teaching, theoretical basics of vocabulary teaching and research status of vocabulary teaching domestic and abroad. The third part surveys problems both from students and teachers in vocabulary teaching in high schools. The fourth part stresses on discussing effective teaching strategies in order to improve vocabulary teaching of English in senior high schools. The last part is a conclusion of this study.
