In recent years, our government has attached more importance to the vocational schools so as to train more urgently needed technical talents through the vocational school education. Obviously, our society needs well-rounded individuals. Although the technological skill is the key point, the general culture knowledge level, especially the English proficiency is also one of the principal factors in talent evaluation. However, English is exactly the weak point for most of the vocational school students. Most of them haven’t paid enough attention to English studying in their middle schools. Their greatest difficulty is the vocabulary learning, especially the vocabulary memorization.In this paper, questionnaire, word pretest and interview are adopted as the research methods to study the problems of vocabulary learning among the freshmen in a vocational school and the root causes of those problems. In addition to this, the adjustments and improvement of vocational school teachers’vocabulary teaching strategies are also reflected on.This study finds that most of those students are not confident in English study and their learning motivation is not correct. The problems mainly lie in their vocabulary learning belief, learning attitude and learning methods. In response to explore issues, the writer offers three proposals. Firstly, in daily vocabulary teaching, teachers should apply vocabulary to class activities and encourage students to take an active part in them to increase their self-confidence. Teachers should change students’opinions upon vocabulary learning and tell them "constant dropping wears the stone". Secondly, teachers should help students optimize their vocabulary learning strategies and study vocabulary through more ways. Thirdly, we teachers should constantly optimize our own teaching strategies so as to meet the teaching requirements.In conclusion, as for the English vocabulary teaching in vocational schools, the two issues, how to teach and how to study should be solved at the same time. Neither of them can be neglected.
