Objective:The purpose of this study was to establish a competency model for head nurses in the new period based on the PPEB(Professional Competency,Psychology Competency,Ethic Competency,Behavior Competency)model,so as to meet the higher requirements out of the reform of the nursing management for head nurses,and also to provide references for excellent head nurses' selection,training and performance appraisal in a hospital.Methods:This study built the primary competency model for head nurses through literature review,theoretical analysis,specialists interview and other methods.Then using the Delphi method,we conducted two surveys on the primary competency model for 16 experts of the coverage of the indicators,the items of indicators,the content of indicators and the importance of indicators.Finally,based on the results of the consultation we built the competency model for head nurses.Results:1.The reliability and representativeness of expert consultation The experts have a better representation and authority through the quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis;the efficient retrieving rates of the questionnaire were 94.12% and 100%,the rates of the experts who give suggestions were 68.75%and 43.75%,indicating the experts of this study have a high degree of enthusiasm and support.After two surveys,the means of the indicators were all higher than 4.5,the coefficient of variation were 0.000~0.159,the coordination coefficient was 0.131,indicating that the central tedency of experts views was gradually increased.2.Choose the characteristics of head nurses Assigning the importance of alternative indicators based on the Liket five-point scoring system,we viewed it as the selection criteria that the means of indicators must be bigger than 3.5 and the coefficient of variation must be smaller than 0.25,choose the characteristics of head nurses combined with experts opinions.Finally,we got the competency model for head nurses including 4 first-level indicators,10second-level indicators and 33 third-level items.Conclusion:This study built the competency model for head nurses based on the PPEB model.1.Using the Delphi method to build the competency model for head nurses,including 4 first-level indicators,10 second-level indicators and 33 third-level items,besides,the study was scientific and reliable.2.The 4 first-level indicators of the competency model were(in descending order of weight): behavior competency(0.446),ethic competency(0.285),professional competency(0.164),psychology competency(0.105).
