Facial recurrent dermatitis, more commonly seen in female patients, is a kind of a common and frequently occurring skin disease. The clinical manifestations include erythema, scales and sometimes swelling, often accompanied by dryness, itch, pain and other discomfort. Objective:To evaluate the efficacy and safety of modified Danggui decoction combined with rehabilitation paste dressing for facial recurrent dermatitis in female patients.Methods:60 female facial recurrent dermatitis patients with the diagnose of blood deficiency and wind dryness according to TCM syndrome differentiation were randomly divided into the treatment group (30 patients) and the control group (30 patients). Patients in the treatment group were treated with modified Danggui decoction combined with rehabilitation paste dressing while those in the control group were treated with rehabilitation paste dressing only. The course of the treatment was 4 weeks. We observed the changes of the clinical manifestations. According to the changes of total scores of clinical syndrome, we calculated the differences before and after the treatment and evaluated the efficacy at the 2nd and 4th week. We also evaluated the effective rates of the TCM syndrome according to the changes of total scores of TCM syndrome in both groups. Furthermore, we evaluated the safety of this observation according to the changes of safety indexes. Results:After 2 weeks,60% patients and after 4 weeks,83.33% patients in the treatment group received effective results while 33.33%(after 2 weeks) and 43.33%(after 4 weeks) in the control group, which showing statistical difference in therapeutic effect(P<0.05). The total scores of clinical syndrome including objective signs (erythema, scales, swelling, and the area of skin lesions) and subjective symptoms (itching, burning, painful, dry and tight feeling) decreased in both groups after treatment. And the decline indexes of the two groups were significantly different (P<0.05), which indicated that the treatment group performed better. As for the total scores of TCM syndrome, after 4 weeks, both groups'scores decreased significantly (P<0.05), according to which the TCM syndrome improved. And the effective rates of the treatment group were 73.33%, showing significant difference from that of the control group13.33%. No serious adverse reactions were observed in both groups. After taking Chinese medicine, one case in the treatment group had slight stomach discomfort, and which disappeared when the patient was asked to take the warm medicine after meals. Two cases in the treatment group had a transient facial tingling sensation after using the silicone oil cream, and which also disappeared by itself without any treatment. All the indexes were in the normal reference ranges before and after the treatment. Conclusion:Modified Danggui decoction combined with rehabilitation paste dressing is safe and effective in the treatment of facial recurrent dermatitis in female patients and is worth extending in clinical practice, which also provides a new idea for the more effective treatment of this disease. Besides, the combined treatment can improve the comfort degree and compliance of the patients, and can provide the theoretical and clinical evidence for the enrichment of traditional Chinese medicine in treating the disease as well.
