Since the 21 st Century, with the accelerating process of urbanization, metropolitanization has become an important trend in current China urbanization,“metropolis peripheral area”,which is formed by metropolis’ s continuous expansion of rural areas, has become an important carrier of urban spatial evolution. As metropolis peripheral area in the urban-rural transition zone, who is the dual characteristics of urban and rural areas,it is necessary to solve the “bottom-up” town, village multi-level development demands, but also with the new spatial extension of the “top-down” central city, which has become the most active and complex area under the spatial evolution of metropolitanization.Driven by the intense urbanization, the urban-rural contradiction in metropolis peripheral area is prominent, the space is complicated and staggered, and the land use clot is serious.Due to the lack of effective guidance, metropolitan development has been passive to accept these “fait accompli” impact, resulting in metropolitan peripheral area of poor spatial efficiency.Previous studies in general qualitative analysis mostly, how to objectively evaluate the status quo, effectively guide the space evolution and enhance the comprehensive benefits of spatial expansion, spatial performance evaluation provides a new perspective of this research. This paper selects Suzhou as the research object, based on reviewing the history of Suzhou spatial evolution, further summarizes the characteristics of spatial evolution of Suzhou metropolis peripheral area, and puts forward the research perspective of spatial performance. Then combined with the relevant research at home and abroad,in order to objectively and accurately reflect the goal of “space performance of metropolis peripheral area”,this paper constructs five systems of social economy, space form, land use, traffic organization and ecological environment, and according to the main influencing factors of the five systems, determines eleven factors, based on the “Target-System-Factor” forms three-level framework, then comprehensively uses the methods of index system of correlation, frequency statistics,Delphi, factor analysis to screen specific indicators, through the Z-score standardization,AHP and expert scoring method, standardized the original indicators, assigns weights, and comprehensive calculates. Finally, the spatial performance evaluation system is used to evaluate the spatial performance of Suzhou metropolis peripheral area, and the corresponding optimization path is put forward based on the problems of spatial performance evaluation, which provide experience and effective reference for the quantitative study of metropolitanization spatial performance. The main conclusions are as follows:(1)Reviewing the development and the spatial evolution process of Suzhou, through the TM remote sensing image analysis and GIS spatial analysis method, this paper sums up the characteristics of spatial evolution of Suzhou metropolis peripheral area: from depend on ancient city,to independent sheet development, and then to muti-group cross development, the overall spatial structure of Suzhou peripheral area gradually become more reasonable, the scale of space rapidly expands, and the evolution of the direction continues change, showing “West-East-North-South” one after another development trend.(2)Based on summarizing the research on domestic and international metropolitanization, spatial evolution and spatial performance, combined with Suzhou metropolis peripheral area its own characteristics, from 5 dimensions of “social economy, space form, land use, traffic organization and ecological environment”,this paper screens 27 indicators to construct the spatial performance evaluation system of metropolis peripheral area.(3)According to the spatial performance evaluation system, from two aspects of static spatial performance distribution and dynamic spatial performance evolution comprehensively evaluate spatial performance of Suzhou metropolis peripheral area, this paper finds the performance distribution is closely related to the urban spatial pattern, the trend of performance evolution is coincidence with the urban development timing and the trend of spatial expansion, the echelon trend of peripheral districts is more obvious, but the disjointed phenomenon of the subsystem factors is serious.(4)Aiming at the problems of spatial performance evaluation of Suzhou metropolis peripheral area, combined with Williamson’s social theory, focusing on analysis from the subjective reasons, this paper concludes the root of the problems into the structural defects of policy and institution, the weak control of planning binding and the development droven by main subjects’ interests. Then further put forward the corresponding optimization path, make clear the multi-center and group development model as the guide to achieve the goal of “good economy, social harmony, compact form, intensive land use, convenient transportation and ecological livability”,and from four levels: integrate spatial performance requirements and establish a framework of unified space development;enhance the urban and rural planning status and improve the planning system construction of legal system;coordinate multiple subjects’ interests and construct shared interests optimal mechanism;optimize the system weak indexes and promote the balanced development of the system factors, put forward optimization strategies.
