Study On The Influence Between Jiangnan Garden And Lingnan Garden

Through cultural communication,Jiangnan and Lingnan gardening mutually influence each other.Understanding how the two cultures talked with each is beneficial for their development through sharing of advantages so that better connection between them can be promoted and further advancement of modern gardening can be orientated to a more logical track in the future.This paper investigates the history of mutual influence between Jiangnan and Lingnan gardening as well as how such mutual influence plays a role in changing the whole culture of gardening design,aiming to conduct a comprehensive and thorough research on the styles of Jiangnan and Lingnan gardening.From literature review on historical and modern studies as well as findings from onsite investigation of some famous gardens,the following four sections will be illustrated in this paper,(1)History of development of Jiangnan gardening and Lingnan gardening is sorted and the characteristics of the two cultures that “Xieyi” and “Wushi” presented in the process of historical development of the two gardening cultures,and the roles that natural conditions,social economy,cultural thoughts,garden designer and garden owner play in the origination and development of different characteristics for the two gardening cultures are analyzed.(2)History of mutual influence between Jiangnan and Lingnan gardening is analyzed theoretically in depth and how phenomena of relegation and sheltering from anarchy,transportational issues,business trade and idea exchanging between schools,etc.,influence the proceeding of their development is summarized.(3)Example studies of mutual influence between Jiangnan and Lingnan gardening through historical figures and their masterpieces selected based on findings in investigation and literature review,then it concluded that mutual influence between Jiangnan gardening and Lingnan gardening are mainly reflected in the background,space layout,landscape gardening intention,cultural ideas,gardening technics.(4)Mutual influence between two gardening cultures is studied through different perspectives,including garden layout,mountain stones design,waterscape,garden architecture,plant landscape,then it can concluded by above analysis that Lingnan gardening adopted some aspects of Jiangnan gardening technics on the basis of maintaining mostly its own traditional gardening technics,while unique stone,building,architectural ornament,furniture and plants species originated from Lingnan gardening can be seen in Jiangnan gardens as well.(5)Current status of Lingnan Gardening is analyzed by understanding the insight of history of influence that Jiangnan Gardening posed on Lingnan Gardening.Based on the findings,suggestions of future protection and renovation are proposed.By studying the existing gardens in Lingnan styles,how Lingnan gardening design can extract advantages of other gardening culture and be integrated.
