As an important part of Chinese Gardening Arts, Lingnan Garden has itsunique history and traditional style. Comparing to royal gardens in the northand the private gardens in Jiangnan regions, Lingnan Garden developed muchlater in time and was structured on a smaller scale. There had not been anyacademic research and study about Lingnan gardens until the new republic wasestablished. Driven by a number of renowned architects in Lingnan states, suchas Xia Changshi and Mo Bozhi, scholars started to analyze Lingnan Garden at acomprehensive and systematic level.Due to the demands of foreign trading after the People’s Republic of Chinawas founded, Lingnan states, especially Guangdong Province, have been at thefront line of economic development. The modern theories, styles and techniquesof the contemporary foreign architecture have had an enormous influence in thedesigns of local structures. It is stated as being ‘beneficiary of the innovation’.In the50’s, the entire Chinese construction industry was influenced by the mainstream of National Form. Architects of Lingnan states applied the researchfindings of classic Lingnan Garden into the creations of new structures.Numerous outstanding works of modern gardens were born within a very shortperiod of time, and referred to as ‘leader of the innovation’. This had greatimpact on the construction industry within the nation. As a special term, Lingnan Garden differs from the traditional Chinesegarden. It combines a variety of styles and achievements from different Chinesegardening arts. It focuses on the coordination with not only the environmentalconditions, such as the land and the climate, but also the requests and the needsof the clients and occupants. Also, it emphasizes the implementation of classicgardening design into contemporary needs. Lingnan gardens absorb the essenceof classic gardening and grow into practical and flexible layouts in order to suitvarious building styles and functions. As a result, it is noted as “New LingnanGarden”.The establishment and development of New Lingnan Garden reflects the patterns and characteristics of the geographic and cultural development of theentire Lingnan region throughout history. Meanwhile, as the result of globalwarming and the integration of economy and culture within different states, theapplication of new Lingnan gardens has gradually been expanded into largerareas, no longer being restricted only within tropical states in the south. Therefore, analysis and studies of New Lingnan Garden can be valued as a greatinput for both academic research and real life practice. The following paper is the result of on-site research and study of a numberof Lingnan gardens. It recounts and introduces the history of New LingnanGarden. It also analyses its use and applications in modern time and evaluatesits results and achievements. The paper aims to provide references for modernarchitecture creation. Implementing the significances of the philosophy andtechnique of Lingnan Garden hopefully will be projected into futureconstruction practices.
