The Research On Planning And Design Of Children’s Outdoor Activity Space In The Residential Area Of Main Urban Area In Chengdu

Healthy growth of children is one of the hottest topics among people. Every family tries to provide the best education for their kids. However, almost all of us have ignored the fact that residential area is closely to affect the development of children in addition to best schools and best education. Children are the most active group of people among a residential community yet a vulnerable group whom are not paid enough serious attention. The idea that every child has the right to play has been raised since 1920s in the West. Since then, children’s playgrounds have been built in western countries and the theoretical system has developed and updated continually. Due to the short of serious attention, domestic children’s playgrounds in residential communities develop lately and lack diversity. Such an outdoor activity environment not only fails to bring the joy for children during their growing or to explore their potential, but limits their creativity and adventure spirit to some extent.Bear in mind the idea to break the traditional design pattern and to seek innovative design concepts, this paper firstly summaries the development status of domestic and foreign children playgrounds in residential communities, secondly analyzes the psychological and behavioral characteristics of children at different ages and thirdly explores the relevance and significance of children’s playground in residential community upon the development of children. Discuss carries on from the level of children’s own needs to the level of adult’s requirements and to the level of environmental harmonious. To explore the feasibility of practical application, we conducted questionnaire surveys in fifteen residential communities equipped with relatively good auxiliary facilities selected from five main administrative regions in Chengdu. We visited some well-designed children’s playgrounds and collect relevant data on site. We proposed principles of accessibility, entertainment, pertinence, harmonious, comprehensive and obstacle-free and safety after taking theoretical studies and field surveys into account. Detailed field design, landscape design, playground instrument and auxiliary facilities construction methods have been raised. The key to design the best children’s outdoor playground is to create an atmosphere that kids truly like. This atmosphere can be developed with the combination of vertical design, space form design, material selection and natural element to stimulate kids’ senses of sight, hearing, smell and touch. Thus by creating an interactive natural environment, the outdoor playground can bring kids a brand new sense of space experience. In the end, we applied the design method described in this paper to one residential community under construction in Chengdu to test our theoretical study and result and to further testify and explore our designing method, in order to create a safe practical, proper dimension and original children’s outdoor activity space for Chengdu and even domestic residential, which provides the certain reference.
