A Study On The Space And Public Activity Of The Former Hankou British Concession Sidewalk

For a long time, the understanding of the sidewalk concentrates on traffic organization, the excessive emphasis on traffic performance makes us ignore the living of the sidewalk, all kinds of irrational and cannot reasonably be predicted from the city public space being squeezed out of the sidewalk, all kinds of irrational and unpredictable public activities have been squeezed out of the sidewalk space. Chinese urban space is crowded, especially the center area of the city, the old city area, squares, greenbelts and other public space are relatively scarce and the status quo of urban public space is relatively scarce, and can not meet the needs of public life from the quantity and quality. And the sidewalk is the most widely used and the most common and most accessible public facilities in the urban space, which can make individual or groups of people, strangers or familiar people, contemporaries or people in different age levels, local or outsider find their willingness to participate in and carry out an activity, and this will effectively alleviate the tense situation of the urban public space and promote the social interaction among urban residents. In the existing research results, the study on considering sidewalk as public space, combined with a specific case, association on the space material element and space use, and based on the initiative of the people, analyzing the activities' strategies of occupying spaces through microscopic angle of view is very limited so far.This paper, takes the Former Hankou British concession sidewalk space as an example, observes and records the public activities occurred in the selected five sidewalk space, summarizes these activities and sum up the characteristics and space requirement of each type of activity; analysis the plane shape, space interface and the surrounding material environment factors of the sidewalk space and discuss the influence of different types of spatial form and spatial material factors on the activity; study the association of public space and public activities, analysis on the various types of activities of space material elements and the space and time strategy of the activities, and combining with a case, delve into the space occupied strategy through microscopic angle of view. Finally the paper points out that urban sidewalk space is an important part of urban public space, emphasizes that the use of sidewalk space reflects the demands of public power, extends the thinking of the planning, design and management of the transformation of the old city,and provides new ideas about the planning, construction and use of sidewalk space, emphasizes that the public life of the sidewalks shows the urban social and cultural features.
