In the process of construction and development of most historic conservation area, the urban traffic patterns were still slow transport such as walking and carriage. The urban traffic patterns have been playing a key role on the shape of urban space. Therefore, the massif scale and space form of historic conservation areas are designed for walking. Wudadao historic conservation area, the Tianjin high-grade residential area, was built in British settlement. It is well known as the "universal building expo garden". Wudadao was named "China's historic and cultural street" in 2010, and it was listed as a historic conservation area in 2011. With the rapid development of motorized traffic, the transport volume of vehicle has been enormously increased in Wudadao which is located in the city center. The increasingly crowded vehicle not only negative to the protection and development of individual buildings and block pattern of historic conservation areas, but also destroys the pleasant environment in blocks. Beside the social equality, walking, one of the major transportation in the city, is good to people's health physically and psychologically, and it's positive to the city environmental protection as well. Moreover, paying attention to urban traffic patterns' influence on formation of historic conservation areas, optimizing the pedestrian environment of historic conservation areas, restoring the original walking behavior, these measures undoubtedly have a long-term impact on protection and development of historic conservation areas. This paper firstly expounds relevant concepts in pedestrian environment of historic conservation areas, and then systematically analyzes the existing achievements of historic conservation areas and pedestrian environment at home and abroad, especially focuses on the foreign research achievements of pedestrian environment in recent years, such as successful pedestrian network criteria presented by Professor Michael Southworth in the university of California, Berkeley and walk score presented by other American researchers. Next, this paper provides the fundamental research on constituent elements, social functions, pedestrian behavior characters, optimization principles of pedestrian environment in historic conservation area.On the basis of the above work, this paper has carried on the thorough field investigation of pedestrian environment in Tianjin Wudadao historic conservation area. Then, combining with the survey data and referencing Professor Michael Southworth's pedestrian network criteria, it estimates the current conditions on network connectivity, transport linkage modes, land use patterns, safety and quality of paths etc., and it calculates the Wudadao's walk score. On that case, this paper analyzes the causes of factors influencing current pedestrian environment. At the end, this paper provides the optimized strategy, according to the current problem and the cause analysis, with the purpose to restore and encourage the walking in Wudadao historic conservation area.
