As an important part of the system of EDM, pulse power supply is one of the important factors affecting the machining process. The reason of low utilization rate of electric energy and processing efficiency of the traditional electric spark machining pulse power supply is mainly based on the high power ceramic resistance as the current limiting resistance of the discharge. Therefore, the green, intelligent and energy saving EDM pulse power supply is the new development direction of electric spark machining technology in the future.This paper analysis the shortcomings and problems of the double DC pulse power supply power main circuit on the basis of in-depth study of electrical discharge machining principle and characteristics. And this paper gives a circuit structure respectively using arc network and low voltage high current chopper, which improve the working conditions of the main circuit of the power of the original. In this paper, the working principle of the energy saving electric spark machining pulse power supply and its working modes are analyzed in detail, and the main parameters of the main circuit of the pulse power supply are analyzed and designed. According to the requirement of specification of the energy-saving EDM pulse power supply, this paper gives the hardware design scheme of pulse power supply. Based on the double DC power supply of pulse power supply, this scheme introduces of the arc starting capacitance circuit, the switching power supply of the original double DC power supply pulse power supply in the main circuit is replaced by an adjustable DC power supply for charging the capacitor charge, the high voltage arc part is completed by capacitor discharge. The PIC series microprocessor of Microchip Company, as the core of the system control device, was used in the control system of the pulse power supply. And the main pulse circuit, the arc starting switch circuit, the main switch driving circuit and the adjusting voltage circuit were respectively designed. In the aspect of the software design of the pulse power supply, the software program of the control system was designed by the modular programming method.Finally, the developed experimental prototype of EDM pulse power supply verifies the correctness of the power supply topology. By test, the designed energy-saving electric spark machining pulse power supply solved the deficiencies existing in arc circuit, improved the working conditions of the power tube in arc circuit, completely realized zero current switching of arc power tube and enhanced energy utilization efficiency and the system reliability of the power.
