It is always needed that make a large number of experiments in the process of research, design, manufacture and use of the radar. If these experiments are carried out in a real radar environment, they are not easy to control and repeat, and they are also not economical and not flexible. So, in the process of research and design of the radar, simulation experiments are becoming more and more common. Simulation experiments have some errors compared with the real experiments. Generally speaking, the accuracy of the experiment results depends on the accuracy of the models of radar systems and radar working environment. The more accurate the models are, the closer the results are to the real environment, but the higher the costs are.In this paper, the motion model of the space target is established based on orbital elements of the space target, and the influence of the spatial object’s motion characteristics to the echo pulse envelope and echo pulse phase have to be considered when the target echo is simulated. This paper introduces the design of space target echo simulator in detail. Firstly, the overall design scheme of the radar echo simulator is introduced, including the hardware platform and the control computer. Then the DSP software implementation of the simulation system is introduced, including the DSP software development tools and processes, the task allocation of DSPs, the detailed design of the underlying program of DSP and the optimization method of DSP software program. The principle of the influence of motion characteristics of space target to the echo envelope and echo phase are analyzed in detail. Finally, every parameter of simulated echo is vertified in detail and all parameters of a low orbit target echo are verified. Compared with other types of radar echo simulators, this simulator is designed for space target detection based on targets’high-speed motion characteristics and takes full use of the real-time signal processing ability of DSP to ensure the coherence of the target echos.
