Due to the multiplicity of disciplines and the variety of cultivation objectives in comprehensive university, the information requirements of nowadays undergraduates are accordingly diversified. The information service pattern of traditional library has become increasingly incapable to satisfy with these requirements. Instead, subject guides, a new information service system, is capable to collect, process, organize and orderly arrange relevant academic resources to provide the demanders with scientific and professional integrated information using discipline as a unit. Under such circumstances, the information needs dilemma can be solved, so that the users from comprehensive university can be better off in both daily study and academic researches. Therefore, it is essential to study and improve subject guides system for the construction and the future development of comprehensive university libraries. The ultimate goal of this research is to promote the quality of subject guides service by analyzing relevant theories concerning system improvement.Several techniques are utilized to make contrastive analysis on domestic and foreign subject guides. In that case, the existing problems can be found. The analysis also includes resource collection, resource organization, classification system, etc. The aim is to come up with a diversified and integrated subject guides which can be used in comprehensive university from the perspective of users, service and management.Starting with the background, significance and research actuality, the research contents and purpose are discussed. And the second part describes the concept, positioning and practical importance of subject guides. Further, after studying domestic and overseas research status, some typical navigators are introduced for better understanding. Based on the aforementioned discussion, a detailed analysis on resource, systematic structure and function set is made to find out some problems existed in current subject guides and then to propose possible solutions. In addition, this research also expounds the building methods concerning subject guides construction for comprehensive university. Besides, the final part takes the discipline "library information and archives management" in Yunnan University as an example to examine the feasibility of the suggested subject guides.
