With the development of manufacturing technology, the paper-making industry is developing into a more intelligent and effective industry rapidly. However, the traditional paper-quality inspection using manpower is neither cost-effective nor efficient, which cannot meet the increasing product inspection demand. So it becomes a must to use automatic detection device in paper manufacturing. However, due to the limit of inspection technology, domestic paper-quality inspection system is advancing slowly currently. Therefore, research on paper-quality inspection system is significantly important to raising the level of the domestic paper-making industry.According to the disadvantages of the traditional paper-quality inspection methods, this thesis develops a paper-site monitoring system based on video analysis. This system utilizes paper-break detection device and video capturing device to realize paper-break detection. In the meanwhile, the captured pictures during paper-break detection can be used for paper-defect detection. This system consists of video capturing devices, paper-quality inspection devices, clients and a server. The server connects paper-break detectors, speed equipment and video capturing device. The paper-break detection device is used to trigger paper-break signal and the speed equipment is used to measure paper tape moving speed. Then paper-break time point in the time series of each binding camera can be calculated. After that, an alert is generated and the corresponding video segment can be played so as to achieve the goal of paper-break detection and quick location. Moreover, this thesis proposes a paper defect detection algorithm based on image processing. The server performs picture analysis using this algorithm to detect paper defect, including spots, holes and edge cracks.The paper-site monitoring system developed in this thesis has been tested, which testifies that the system can accurately detect and locate paper break. Besides, the test also proves the effectiveness of the algorithm which is used to detect the three kinds of paper defect. All in all, this system can provide a strong guarantee for the paper quality.
