The Research For Some Issues On University Library’s Cataloging Outsourcing

Cataloging outsourcing is a new method adopted by university library to cope with the problems, such as backlog books, shortage of manpower, tight budget etc. Cataloging outsourcing can not only solve the problems of university library effectively, but also can promote the development of library’s core business, further improve the library’s innovation capability and overall strength. However, in the face of the issues and the potential risk of the project of cataloging outsourcing, many college and university library hesitate to move forward to this project.This paper analyses the issues of the university library’ cataloging outsourcing by combining the theory and method of project management. This paper first introduces the research background and significance of the university library’s cataloging outsourcing, and then it analyses the application of the project management in this project. After that it introduces the connotation as well as the mode of cataloging outsourcing; besides, it compares the connotation of cataloging outsourcing at home and abroad. Then it focuses on the analysis of the demand for university library to carry out the project of cataloging outsourcing, and it analyses the outsourcing cost. In addition, the paper mainly elaborates the various risk factors of university library’s cataloging outsourcing, and puts forward the corresponding solutions and preventive measures for each risk factor. Finally it expatiates the cataloging outsourcing of Tianjin University of Commerce Boustead College library including the preparation stage, the implementation stage and the evaluation stage, and it provides practical reference for other university libraries.
