Study On The Outsourcing Of Academic Library's Acquisition And Cataloging

Library outsourcing has been used in the nations, such as Japan,Europe, America. And it has achieved success. Outsourcing cataloging is the most effective one of the outsourcing library functions. With the evolution of academic library, the process of cataloging standardization, the booksellers'growing and the development of information technology, Outsourcing cataloging will be used widely in domestic library as a new mode of management.Academic library use outsourcing cataloging functions for the following reasons: cost effectiveness, improve staff efficiency,removal of backlog, the acquisition of special expertise, raising competition ability, propulsion of standardizes progress, and so on. On the other hand outsourcing cataloging may influence the librarian's psychology. Meanwhile libraries face the risk factors from the vendor sometimes. When libraries consider outsourcing cataloging functions, it is important that the program is carefully and strategically planned, implemented and managed.This thesis compared and analyzed the modes of outsourcing library's acquisitioning and cataloguing. Appropriate cataloging outsourcing type and extent should be selected by academic library base on own requirement. The cataloguing workflow took place a transformation after outsourcing cataloging. In ILASII 2.0 (integrated library automation system II 2.0) there are two methods to implement the outsourcing cataloguing: (1) Librarians check between the books and MARC, holding data through books checking; (2) Librarians check between the books and MARC, holding data by examining and proofreading.Bookseller is the key factor in the process of outsourcing academic library's cataloguing. This thesis discussed how to choose and estimate services of booksellers. And a bookseller value system was established on factors such as company credit, services, outstanding achievement, percentage of getting book, etc.After outsourcing cataloging the academic libraries must realize that the core mission needs be transformed. There is still much work to be researched.
