Because of the rapid economic development in many areas, illegal sewage discharge frequently induces downstream pollutions that may destroy the entire ecosystems. Hence, water quality monitoring of special areas is significant to the protection of the reservoir water ecosystems. With the increasing pollution, drawbacks of conventional water quality monitoring systems emerge gradually. In order to enhance the level of monitoring, the systems with characteristics of multi-point, real-time and continuous monitoring are in urgent need.According to the seven metrics of reservoir water quality, including chromium, lead, volatile phenol, chemical oxygen demand, anionic surfactants, ammonia nitrogen, total phosphorus, this paper designs a water quality monitoring system for the reservoir. This system uses the multi-parameter water quality instrument developed by Micro System Center of Chongqing University and integrates the technologies of wireless sensor network and GPRS.Specific work of this paper is reflected in the following aspects:1)We consult the recent development and research status of the water quality monitoring system home and abroad. Then we analyze the development direction of reservoir water quality monitoring systems, and discuss the significance of reservoir water quality monitoring system based on wireless sensor networks.2)For special applications of reservoir, we take miniature multi-parameter water quality monitoring instrument as sensor nodes, which is developed by the Micro System Center of Chongqing University. Combining with wireless sensor networks, GPRS technology, we establish a complete system architecture and design solution for reservoir water quality monitoring system.3)Based on the analysis of existing routing protocols for wireless sensor networks, we develop a multi-hop approach, a routing optimization protocol called LEACH-MH to adapt the special applications of reservoir. Compared to a traditional protocol LEACH, LEACH-MH protocol extends the lifetime of the wireless network by partitioning network within the optimal number of clusters and using multi-hop communication way. Using MATLAB simulation, we compare the proposed protocol with the current mainstream clustering protocol.4)Based on the development board FB2530 EB of Feibi company, we modify the Z-Stack protocol stack and verify the advantage of the multi-hop routing optimization algorithm LEACH. This work laid a compacted foundation for reservoir water quality based on wireless sensor networks.5) Based on the current experimental conditions, the multi parameter monitor, Zig Bee development board and embedded monitoring platform of the proposed scheme is tested in preliminary, the data transmission. To further validate the reliability of the scheme.
