As the world’s population growth, the number of visually impaired is increasing. The vulnerable groups draw more and more attention with the rapid development of social civilization, and the great progress in science and technology also makes the blind-help products research become a hot issue. At the same time, Electronic Travel Aids(ETA) system arises, which is to assist visually impaired to solve walking problem.In this paper, a system based on DSP technology and ETA technology is designed, the real-time image processing technology is also applied to help the blind in this system, the system aims at providing a portable, easy-to-use, high accuracy and low price ETA system to the blind.This paper firstly introduces the research status and development trend of ETA, and then makes a demand analysis of target system, decide the basic structure of the system and selected core components, finished the peripheral circuit design, related devices chip selection, software design on the basis of DSP. Finally, test the system, examine the effects of real-time image processing. This article also discuss about all kinds of blind processing algorithm, using the edge detection, image segmentation, straight line detection technology, transplanted all the algorithm to DSP system and optimize it, to make sure they can achieve the highest efficiency in the DSP system.Experimental results show that the system can use camera to catch the real-tim e picture of the environmental information, then digitize the analog single and store it in the external SDRAM, at the same time, real-time data processing is doing in the DSP, it can correctly extract the blind road edge, segment the blind area, and make voice prompt to helping visual disabilities walking independently, it achieved good effect in the experiment test.
