With the increment of blind people and more attention to them, Electronic Travel Aids(ETA) is advanced. It assists blind people in independent, safe orientation and mobility by giving spatial information while walking. Some knowledge and development about Auditory Display and ETA are introduced and discussed, as well as the relationship between them. Meanwhile, the conception model about ETA and its three development phases are introduced, some design principles are also showed in detail. The knowledge discussed in this paper is valuable to design and develop the electronic travel aid further.Research of ETA based on camera input and auditory display, it has a better developing prospect. Ongoing research project, AudioMan, uses Sonification and Auditory Icon or Earicon to transmit information. The Data-Sound mapping has the most relativity between real data and sound data. It will help the blinds understand the information of the sound more quickly and effectively. And we assess some mapping about orientation with questionnaire survey and the results show the user listening model of AudioMan is better than the current systems.
