With the rapid development of the computer vision and intelligent guide technology in recent years, image recognition plays a more and more important part in a great number of fields, which include ones from all kinds of access control system using biology recognition to large scale intelligent traffic system. In associated fields, image processing and recognition provide a truly original approaches or more advanced solutions.Great achievements have been made in intelligent navigation fields, as a specific application field in recent years by utilizing the up-to-date technology of image recognition, most of which focus on vehicle navigation. Instead, the navigation technology doing a favor for the blind or visually impaired persons is always an important field worthy of being explored, because the research objective in this is characterized with its specialization, after all.With a higher level of social culture and civilization, the foresightful care for the handicapped suffering from a serious physical disability is just one of various forms to reflect that social progress. Most countries all over the world has build a side walk beside the streets in cites, that is blind side walk. However, the utilization ratio of side walks is a patch on what they are planed, which is related with not only frequency of outdoor activity but also the convenience and security of blind sidewalk if used.Considering the limit effects of blind sidewalks in guiding the outdoor walk of the blind, this paper proposes a solution using embedded system to provide navigation for the blind or visually impaired persons. Integrating with the high performance fix-point DSP ADSP-BF533 and video codec SAA7113, a hardware platform using as image processing is designed while recognition algorithms implemented on ported embedded operation system and optimizing methods are given. The results of experiment suggest that this system has good real-time property and recognition accuracy, which can service the blind’s need for walking outdoors independently.
