Free Chinese newspapers in Canada have become major channels for Chinese people in Canada to obtain information about local community and China’s development and play important roles in spreading information and maintaining emotional bond among overseas Chinese. They have been developed in Canada for more than one hundred years, but still have not received due attention. Adopting interviews, observations and literature analysis, this study takes the angle of media ecology to analyze the internal and external relationships among media ecosystem, as well as the interactions between all kinds of media ecological factors, and reveals the principles and inbeing of the development of the free Chinese newspapers in Canada. This study bases itself in today’s new media trend, concludes with a discussion of free Chinese newspaper’s strengths and weaknesses, opportunities and treats, and gives a few recommendations about their future.The major part of this paper consists of 3 parts: the history of Chinese paper in Canada; the analysis about the exterior and interior environment of free Chinese paper in Canada; problems that face the free Chinese paper in Canada and solutions. The conclusion of this paper is that free Chinese newspapers in Canada are facing chances and dangers at the same time in the new media era. In order to develop more living space, free Chinese newspapers need to face the trend of new media and constantly blaze new trails. Meanwhile, they must be based on local culture,take Chinese traditional culture as a link, and continue to strength the relationship with local community, enhance communication with all Chinese and Chinese mass organizations. What’s more, they should strength the cooperation with medium from home and abroad, and explore the transformation form of traditional media.
