Nowadays, with the rapid development of wireless communication systems, the demand of these equipments is growing larger and large r, along with the increasing quality requirement. The wireless commu nication systems, including WLAN,Wi-Fi and cellular network, are becoming an important part of our daily life.Power amplifier consumes the most energy in a wireless communi cation system. It greatly affects the overall system performance. Now the power amplifiers are mostly designed and made with compound semiconductor, which brings difficulties in integration with other mo dules using CMOS process on a single chip. This problem brings us great motivation to design power amplifier using CMOS.Compared with traditional bulk CMOS, SOI CMOS has a lot of a dvantages in power amplifier design, such as smaller parasitic param eters, better isolation, easier for layout design, and so on. In our des ign, we use the IBM 0.18μm SOI CMOS for design and simulation.This paper introduces the background of power amplifiers, includin g its performance parameters, classification, and some technologies fo r improving. Then SOI CMOS process is revealed, compared with b ulk CMOS. Last and most importantly, a class AB power amplifier and a class F one are presented in detail.
