In recent years, large-scale power grid construction has been speeding up.Power lines become more and more complex. Jumper discharge, line trip andother electrical accidents caused by windage yaw of transmission lines occuredfrequently. Once occurs the windage yaw accidents of insulator strings inremote mountainous areas and extreme harsh environment, it would be difficultto determine the position of the insulator string failure. Therefore, themonitoring of insulator strings windage yaw is an extreme important andpractical significant study.With the smart grid gradually being widely studied and achieved a certainmarket applications, the smart grid may become the development direction of afuture power grid. However, the conventional measurement methods oftransmission line insulator strings windage yaw have high risk factor, highmaintenance costs, which can not meet the development trend of a future smartgrid. It is necessary to study a monitoring method and a system of transmissionline insulator strings windage yaw complied with the requirements of themodern smart grid. In this paper, based on the theory of advanced detection technology, the ZigBee technology and the GPRS communication technology,we present the ZigBee and the GPRS converged communication method,designed and implemented the transmission line insulator string windage yawmonitoring system. First, the detection method of transmission line insulatorstrings windage yaw is theoretically researched. Next, ZigBee technology isused to build a wireless sensor network based on each monitoring node. Thecoordinator data are transmitted to remote monitoring platform via GPRScommunication technology. This design realizes real-time monitoring oftransmission line insulator strings windage yaw. The main points of this paperinclude the following aspects.(1) Analyze the background of insulator strings windage yaw and thesignificance of the research.(2) According to the actual situation of transmission line insulator stringswindage yaw, analyze the detection method of transmission line insulator stringswindage yaw, design the overall scheme of transmission line insulator stringwindage yaw monitoring system.(3) Introduce the background of ZigBee wireless sensor networktechnology, the IEEE802.15.4protocol and ZigBee protocol stack frame.(4) Design and verify the hardware circuit of monitoring system, includingpower supply circuit, sensor conditioning circuit, CPU peripheral circuit,ZigBee RF circuit and GPRS communication circuit. And analyze the principleof each circuit module. (5) Complete the programming of monitoring system, including datacollection program, ZigBee networking program, data protocol conversionprogram between coordinator and GPRS,and GPRS module communicationprogram. And analyze the software program of each module.(6) Design the PC interface of remote monitoring platform, database andTCP server. Analyze and discuss the received remote monitoring data.The field data are real-time acquired by the monitoring system oftransmission line insulator strings windage yaw and are real-time displayed onthe remote monitoring platform. It is helpful for managers to analyze the actualsituation of transmission line insulator strings windage yaw, to take timelymeasures for abnormal situation to guarantee the transmission line insulatorstrings safety, economical and efficient operation.
