Connected vehicles(CVs) have increasingly become promising components as internet of things(Io T) are deployed in the field of intelligent transportation systems(ITS). To enhance the traffic and travel safety, advanced CVs’ technology need to be developed including how to cooperate between sensing, communication, control and computing technology. Once we acquire the situation awareness of the road traffic and surrounding environments, the transportation systems will become more robust and efficient. With the rapid development of Io T industry, the research of CVs technology has gradually attracted the extensive attention recently. There have been lots of theoretical and simulated results appeared in this research area. However it’s still very imminent for us to consider how to evaluate the key technology of CVs using more realistic data and model. Especially for the large scale experimental evaluation of CVs, it will be severely restricted by available space, reproducibility, cost, security and parameter adjustment, etc.To solve these problems, a miniature architecture of CVs is proposed based on the cooperative awareness technology. The design of hardware and software is presented in detail, which can realize the surrounding environment awareness, multimodal networking and cooperative control in indoor environments. Moreover, we evaluated the feasibility and practicality of this miniature architecture through the actual testing of miniature vehicles. The main research contents are as follows:(1) The miniature system framework of CVs is set up, and miniature vehicles are designed with the function of information collection and processing, automatic tracking and collision avoidance. The in-vehicle information can be obtained in real time, such as speed, location and power, etc., which will be transmitted to the control center for processing and analysis via wireless modules;(2) Cooperative communication network model is established by combining Zig Bee(IEEE 802.15.4) with Wi-Fi(IEEE 802.11a), where the connectivity of vehicle-to-vehicle(V2V) and vehicle-to-road(V2R) is realized by information interaction and cooperative control.(3) The vehicle autonomous coordination and collaboration positioning are designed, tested and evaluated. The results indicate that the CVs miniature model has a promising application value in reducing testing cost and evaluating coordination method and system reliability.
