Collaborative Object Manipulation (COM) is an important problem in Collaborative Virtual Environment (CVEs) research. COM refers to the simultaneous shared object manipulation by multiple users according to different degrees of freedom. In this paper, we introduced CVEs and the technical requirement of CVEs and thesimultaneous control design rules. The Computer Supported Cooperative Work(CSCE) in CVEs is also introduced. We also discuss the advantages of the 3Dmodeling of Virtual Environment and Scene using Java3D and the difficulty ofconstructing a Virtual Environment from technical level. In this paper, the property and advantages of Collaborative Object Manipulation is also described. We discuss the problem how to increase the efficiency of COM. The research about COM could affect the related research areas and may be applied in many application areas (military training, 3D modeling, information seeking, data mining, etc). We introduced Multiple Perspectives and Mutual Awareness in the COM system. Looking into effect of efficiency in COM by integrating these technologies is quite new and never discussed before. As the operation upon tank is common, represent and easy in military training and 3D modeling, we design and realize a Collaborative Tank Manipulation System to discuss the effect. The system is a basic work and we introduced the flow and detail design later in the paper. According to the simultaneous control design rules in Virtual Environment and mutual awareness, three different multiple perspectives modes (multiple, homo, and single) and three different levels of mutual awareness modes (viewshare, verbal, and none) are designed. Study the effects of different perspective manipulation modes and different mutual awareness modes on the effects of COM under different collaborative tasks. The combination of viewshare and verbal communication to increase the mutual awareness in CVEs is also creative. We design and perform a series of collaborative experiments on the system. Wealso collect the experiment data. Through analyzing the data, we meet the experiment conclusion. Conclusion of the experiment indicates that the effects of different multiple perspectives modes and mutual awareness modes are tightly related to special collaborative tasks. In a particular collaborative task, the efficiency of COM can be greatly improved with properly designed multiple perspectives mode and mutual awareness mode.
