Laser ranging technology is an important application since the laser was produced. Laser ranging technology plays an very important role in the field of military industry, aerospace industry, high tech robots and construction industry applications, thereby, it is needed by varieties of industries. Laser range finder is continuously improving and developing towards a direction of higher precision, more efficient, safer and more convenient to use, lower energy consumption, smaller in size.According to the range of laser ranging instrument, it can be classified into short range, middle range and long range techniques. Laser ranging technology has incomparable advantages in the fields of product testing, localization and production monitoring, therefore, it has wonderful development prospects. This paper focuses on the short-range laser ranging technology for research, to design a system with the range in 90mm-110mm,high precision and good usability.In this paper, the existing methods of laser ranging related theory are studied, by comparing the advantages and disadvantages of each approach, finally select laser triangulation method as the theoretical foundation. Afterwards, hardware and software are detail designed based on laser triangulation method. The hardware design include a system required single-point laser and CMOS image sensors, and then the system are designed and fabricated based on the measuring range and the selected element. In the software, a system control interface was designed by using Matlab software. The software function include real-time measurement, image processing, date display and storage.Finally, the designed and installed short distance measuring system is calibrated, furthermore, data is processed, the source of system error is analyzed.
