Modernization as a world historical process is a whole process of structural change. All the countries, nationalities and regions reconstruct themselves during the modernization. However, different nations and regions have different timing and spatial structure toward modernization processes due to their conditions. As to Chinese ethnic regions, due to social, historical, geographical and many other reasons, the modernization starts even later, the process is slow; and keeps among different ethnic groups is uneven. At present, great changes take place in minority areas in China. Modern culture and traditional culture inevitably clash and even cause complex contradiction, no exception for traditional culture of ethnic groups. Therefore, how to survive in the process of modernization becomes an urgent question for ethnic culture.The national symbol as a representation of a nation carries the spirit of sharing memory of a nation, which is an important element of ethnic identity and continuity. However, during the process of modernization, the style, function and significance traditional national symbol change inevitably and reappear with new features and characteristics. In this regard, the change of national symbol becomes a worthy concern. From this perspective, this paper, employing the methods of fieldwork and literature research and taking the national symbols of Tujia Mationlity in Enshi as the research object, analyze the multiple changes during the process of modernization and the new features of relevant mechanisms; furthermore, the modern transformation of Chinese Ethnic Minorities culture will be examined.Enshi Tujia area is a good choice for this paper in that it is a transition zone between western China and central China; besides, it is quite typical area where fast-paced social change takes place. The study of Modern Transformation of Enshi Tujia culture may contribute to the studies of minority areas of western China. Overall, this thesis develops mainly from the following aspects:Research the history of National symbols and their function, significance changes with the times, and then explore the relationship between human practical activities and communication activities.Analyze the new features of national symbols in contemporary society; based on this, it observes its diverse contradictions of modernity picture.Research the mechanisms of national symbol in the modern transformation and identify the various forces and tension between them.Further clarify the inevitable trend of modern transformation of national symbols and recognize the difficulties and problems which put forward some corresponding strategies.
