Enlightenment And National Salvation: The Modernity Of The Morning Newspaper Supplement And Its Special Issue Edited By Xu Zhimo

The Morning Post Supplement in the period of Hsu Chih-mo's editing refers to the Morning Post Supplement from October 1925 to October 1926.Since the contributors,editorial methodology,format designing,and publishing structure are obviously different from the Morning Post Supplement in the period of Li Dazhao's and Sun Fuyuan's editing,the Morning Post Supplement in the period of Hsu Chih-mo's editing reflects strong characteristics of liberalism and democracy,with the progressive significance of dissemination of new culture and transformation of Chinese society.This research studies the modernity of the Morning Post Supplement in the period of Hsu Chih-mo's editing with the literature method and the text analysis method,wishing that this research can enrich category and value of the history of Journalism and communication,and provide historical reference for the current social modernization process.This paper is divided into 6 chapters.The first chapter is the introduction;the second chapter discusses the relationship between the Morning Post Supplement and modernity.It explains the meaning of modernity,discusses the reason why modernity is proper to study the Morning Post Supplement and the basic content of modernity theory application;the third chapter studies the reformation of the Morning Post Supplement in the period of Hsu Chih-mo's editing,discusses the reformation of publishing structure,editorial department,format designing and column setting and also discusses the modernity of media;the fourth chapter is one of the main part of the paper,mainly on the modernity of social structure level in the Morning Post Supplement;the fifth chapter is the other main part of the paper,mainly on the modernity of cultural psychology level in the Morning Post Supplement;the sixth chapter is the conclusion.The research found that the reformation of the Morning Post Supplement in the period of Hsu Chih-mo's editing formed the publishing structure that newspaper supplement with interspersed weekly magazine.The weekly magazine of the Morning Post Supplement pays attention to social problem and provides solution,reflecting strong characteristics of quality of news,practicability and service property.In addition,the Morning Post Supplement reflects the modernity of media in the aspects of editorial methodology,format designing and communication contents,which are the Western elements of the form and the aesthetic features of the "creative genius,simplicity and adventure imagination" of the style.The research also found that the modernity of social structure level in the Morning Post Supplement is the pursuit of political modernity,economic modernity and educational modernity.This paper found that under the background of semi colonial and semi feudal society,the modernity of China is first manifested in the pursuit of the true independence of the state,and then the pursuit of the prosperity of the country and the all-round development of people.In this process,the "enlightenment" is the means and the "salvation of the nation" is the purpose.The Morning Post Supplement did a lot of work awakening and enlightening people with its modernity of format,richness of articles,diversity of ideas and strong effects of communication,in pursuit of political modernity,economic modernity and educational modernity as the main line,trying to create a modern nation which could be called the real Republic of China from inside to outside.The research last found that the modernity of cultural psychology level in the Morning Post Supplement is the pursuit of modernity of life style and modernity of value concept.The modernity of life style includes the spread of modern health concept,the recommendation of modern social organization and the quality improvement of the basic necessities of life;the modernity of value concept includes the spread of the concept of gender equality,the voice of individuality liberation and the recommendation of modern scientific spirit.The Morning Post Supplement's recommendation of the modernity of cultural psychology level is to abandon those untimely habits and conception from all the minor details of life style and value concept,to shape the new life of people in the country.This reflects the Morning Post Supplement's focus on people and the transformation of people,which are the efforts in creating new national and finally creating the real Republic of China.
