Family is a kind of social organizations with special emotional connection. Like other social organizations, family is ideological. Grossberg gave out an easy way to understand ideology:Ideology is a particular way to looking at the world, the existing social relationships and organizations are seen as natural and inevitable. As part of the social organization, family (which is likely to be the smallest body of social organization) establishes its own rules between the members, like other social organizations. These rules are ideological. Family ideology, in short, is a specific method to treat family relations and family affairs under the influence of specific social hierarchy elements.Media is likely to be the most important code producer in contemporary society. One of the functions of media is that it can directly involve in the process of ideology production.As a result, all countries attach importance to the power of the media propaganda. Media constructivism theory has pushed media’s role in the representation of ideology to an extreme condition:without media representation, people cannot access the real world. Media is the only way to connect people and the world they cannot access directly.This study found that the medium construct ideologies by building and breaking the stereotypes. Mass media continuously transmit all kinds of stereotypes through its product to the audience all the time. These stereotypes is not only media creation, there are also representations of the audience’s daily life. Stereotype itself is a highly ideological concept. Study of stereotype is rather meaningful for the study of ideology.Ideological research is one of the main components of culture researches; ideological criticism is also the kernel of western cultural criticism. This paper uses the research paradigm of western modern cultural criticism, the popular American sitcom "Modern Family" is chosen as the research sample. This paper utilizes various research methods in the category of text analysis, interpreting the roles’stereotypes of family ideology, which represented in Modern Family?.Main analysis part of this research can be mainly divided into three parts:The first part analyze the representation of roles’stereotypes in family ideology of 揗 odern Family?. This part analyzes the role’s stereotypes of women, men, offspring and gay couples in family ideology. The second part uses the paradigm of realism, structuralism, interpellate of ideology and narrative analysis to discusses how the media text represents the role’s stereotypes of family ideology. The last part of the paper adopts the perspective of social development and changes and media political economics to discover the reasons for what media represents the roles’stereotypes in family ideology.
