Polarized Representation Behind The Ideological Conflicts

Xi-Ma Meeting had become the focus of international debate for a time,media images of the two leaders had been fully represented.However,the blue and green camps in Taiwan had shown a polarization of reports to construct the media images of Mr Ma.What kinds of frames and discourse strategies are used to express the ideological struggle by different ideological medias? What is the difference between the different ideological medias and the media constructive strategies of leaders throughout different social contexts?In order to study the dynamic process of media images construction of Mr Ma appeared in the mainstream media in Taiwan,this study takes Xi-Ma Meeting as the reference point,and selects the period of Mr Ma winning in 2008 Taiwan “election”,as well as the period of retiring "President" in 2016 as the three representative events or stages,to explore the different construction of Mr Ma's media images in the three stages by representative medias of the blue and green camps.Frame analysis is applied as the main methodology in this study,complemented by Critical Discourse analysis(CDA),to analyze media images of Mr Ma in the "China Times" and "Liberty Times".It finds that,with different political and social context,the two newspapers Showing a polarized discrepancies of Mr Ma's media images construction.Ma as active communicators in China times,appears as “a founder of the cross-strait peace”,“the most misunderstood President in Taiwan”,“leader of high charming personal traits”,“leader of open and justice”;At the same time,Ma as passive communicator in Liberty Times,appears as “leader of treason”,“leader of weak”,“leader of dictatorship”,“warning and supervision object”,“leader involved in scandals”.Media images of politicians presented both positive construction and negative construction in Taiwan medias.The two newspapers adopted discourse strategies like Transitivity,Modality,Metaphor and Intertextuality in the media images construction."China Times" and "Liberty Times" on Mr Ma's polarized different media images construction,is the result of political and social ecology changes in Taiwan,as well as opposite political and ideological medias.At the same time,Ma's discrepancies in media images reflect the political orientation of Taiwan medias,the complex political media ecology and the path of identity construction,as well as the interactive relationship between the politic and media of Taiwan,which as a special region.
