The entertainment news nowadays tends increasingly towards parochial and vulgarization. And it has been sacrificed in the name of "the news for the entertainment world" or sometimes even "privacy sensationalization" and "celebrity gossip". In the year of fragmented information and entertaining news, why would stars’privacy turn into a topic, which is snapped by media, crazily spread in Internet and intensely discussed by the public? First of all, being a star as well as a public figure, keeping a certain degree of exposure is an important strategy to maintain their attention and advertising revenue. And of course those "shinning deeds" that the stars hope to present, more often than not, are spreading in conformity with the mainstream values and in a way that the public may be fond of. Secondly, the development of the Internet communication has exacerbated the competition of entertainment news industry. As the consequence, the media must spare no effort to seize every action from the stars with any methods, which means even through the slightest message as they heard, they have to report the news in the very first time, occupy the news layout and attract the eyes of the public. So, on the one hand, the stars are indeed willing to ensure their own popularity through the exposure rate by media. On the other hand, they wouldn’t want the over exposure of their own privacy by the media. Stars and entertainment media are like playing a game in which they switch their sides from defensive to offensive and their interests are threatened. Meanwhile they constantly and energetically create an entertainment feast for their fans, the industry and the public. In this paper, the writer would take Southern Metropolis Entertainment Weekly in 2014 as an example and select some influential and sensational cases to conduct research. And through the analysis, arrangement, induction and summary of the causes and backgrounds of the privacy exposure, coverage features, resultant problems and some countermeasures to reduce the exposure of the stars’ privacy, the writer would come to a conclusion that in Southern Metropolis Entertainment Weekly there are three aspects for the backgrounds and causes of the stars’ privacy exposure. The first is the industry background and the fierce media competition. The second one is the background of audience’s demand. Trying to satisfy the audience’s need for the information is necessary. The third is the social background and the prevalent of the consumerism culture. So through the analysis of the three backgrounds, we could have a whole understanding of the reasons of such high frequency of stars’ privacy exposure phenomenon. Thus, this paper continues to analyze the features of stars’ privacy exposure. Again taking Southern Metropolis Entertainment Weekly as a case, the writer first defines the concept of stars’ privacy and analyzes the news source, major subjects and type of reporting of stars’ privacy exposure. So that we could explore the reasons why the privacy exposure is accepted by the market and welcomed by the audience. Moreover we could also find some of problems which result from the privacy exposure phenomenon, such as the contradiction among the privacy of the stars, the audience right to know and the media right to report, and the ethics loss of entertainment news practitioners and the negative influences to the audience, especially the adverse effects for teenagers Therefore, the last part of the article puts the emphasis on the analysis of those feasible countermeasures which could reduce or put an end to such exposure phenomenon by studying the following four aspects, the industry rules in entertainment news reporting of stars’ privacy, the fundamental limits of the protection of stars’privacy, the regulation and control of the entertainment news practitioners and the promotion of audience media literacy.
