The research object of this paper is the domestic design class book publishing. The Open Book Information Technology co, Ltd, which provides book industry consultation, investigation and research, made a book classification system. In this system, the first grade is literature, the second is liberal arts, and design books belong to the third grade, which is a very small one. In China, more than 300 publishing houses out of 583 are publishing design books, occupying 1% of the book market. From 2009 to 2014, there are about 1300 to 1800 new titles of design books came to the market each year. The reader group of the books are relatively concentrated and stable. They are mainly professional college students, teachers, researchers and practitioners of institutional design. Compared with the European countries, the United States, Japan and other developed countries, China doesn’t have a high statue in design industry yet. The lack of designers results the lack of good writers and good works. With the increase in the need of social development, the number of the colleges setting the design majority has increased up to more than 1000. Therefore, the number of students in design also increases every year. As the result, the publishing organizations publish a large number of design teaching material. However, the quality of these books are of intermingled, and the problems such as the lack of creativity, uniqueness are generally obvious.This paper focuses on the study of the present situation of the publication of the books, using the data analysis, literature analysis and instance. Setting the time dimension from 2009 to 2014, the paper tries to summarize the publishing status of the design books in China. Design books only occupy 1% of the book market, The market share is small, in the book market ministrial accounted for less than 1%, and those which stay at the top list are those classical publishing houses, new publisher seldom appears. Interior design books and foreign famous design class sellers dominate the market. Interior design books, especially the home decoration books sold much better than other design books. Meanwhile, this paper also tries to reveal some present problems of the domestic design class book publishing.For example, good original works are rare, following publishing phenomenon occurs frequently, the quality of design books is intermingled, the classification of the design is not rigorous, even chaotic, etc. This paper tries to find out the reasons and the root of the problems, with comparing the data and analysing the cases. Moreover, the paper also tires to provide strategies about how to solve the problems. Strategies mainly include improving the publishing of original works and importing classic works of foreign masters; enhancing the overall quality of the design class book publishing; establishing textbooks censorship, inviting excellent authors; enhancing the digital publishing and media according to the characteristics of design books; unifying classification standard, training the library staff, in order to further standardize design books classification.This paper is to provide useful reference to lead the publication of design books onto a more healthy, steady and sustainable way.
