With both EPON and GPON optical network technology widely used in the country,the shortcomings of each of the two technologies is also growing significantly, and thusbecome increasingly strong demand for technology integration.The current overall PONdeployment, both EPON, and GPON in there, thus the dual-mode ONU emerged. It is notonly solved the problem of carrier central office deployment of the hybrid access, reducepurchases of terminal; but also to promote the integration of the two technologies, andprovide a valuable reference for the two technologies fusion.This thesis analyzed characteristics of GPON/EPON technology and compared thetwo technologies, also it is give a brief introduction to the trend of the development fordual-mode ONU; ONU registration principle based G.984.3and802.3ah standarddetails,and it is focusing on ONU ranging and auto-discovery process through thecompletion of the the MPCP control frame interaction in the EPON system, as well asONU ranging and ONU state transition through PLOAM message interaction and timing tocomplete the activation process in the GPON system; Combined theoretical research, scenemode switching may be carried out in accordance with the dual-mode ONU in GPON/EPON system, automatic identification system mode switching several design methods;Comparison of several design methods in many ways by the cost and achieved, theselected two kinds of suitable design method, completed according to the design method ofa software implementation, and a processing flow of register; Final build test scenarios,ONU and OLT connection simulated the real environment of the user, to verify the designof dual-the ONU mode switching and registration process is feasible, that the dual-modeONU automatic identification system.This thesis is based on existing standards, in-depth analysis of the mode switchingdual-mode ONU in a variety of circumstances may be summarized into two: GPON systemswitch to the EPON system; another conversely EPON system switch to the GPON system.Thus proposed the dual-mode ONU how to judge the current system, so as to correct completion of mode switching, and in the corresponding normal mode registered designand software implementation.
