Optical fiber communication has developed significantly in recent years, all kinds of technologies are proposed to improve the network performance. In optical fiber backbone networks, optical burst switching(OBS) is considered to be one of the most effective technologies to improve switching capacity. In optical fiber access networks, passive optical network (PON) is seen as the most effective technologies to eliminate the bandwidth bottleneck in the last mile. Both the OBS and PON system should face the problem of receiver and transmit optical burst mode signal, comparing with continuous signal, burst mode signal has much difference, traditional transceiver cannot deal with them properly, some special technologies must be used- the optical burst mode transceiver.First, the technology of optical burst mode receiver is studied, existing schemes are summed up and receiver topology base on feed-forward is selected. For the disadvantages of existing optical burst mode receiver, the design is improved greatly, including producing proper width reset signal, using varactor in top-hold circuit to shorten the preamble time and peak detect error, using delay circuit after TIA to shorten the preamble time, separate two packets properly in the guard time by two AND gates. Combine this new methods, the design of optical burst mode receiver is accomplished, including the design of the mode of the photodiode, adaptive trans-impedance amplifier (TIA), automatic threshold circuit (ATC), limiting amplifier (LA), the circuit are simulated at bit rates up to 1.25Gb/s.The performance of the receiver has been improved greatly, the receiver sensitivity is -28.2dBm, dynamic range is 27.7dB, the preamble time is 30ns and the guard time is 140ns, which are all improved greatly.Then, the technology of optical burst mode transmitter is studied, First, the difficulties of the technology of optical burst mode transmitter are summarized, then directly modulated optical burst mode transmitter is designed using analog circuit method, which is combined with optical burst mode receiver above.
