Along with the development of mobile networks in mature, the repeater application technology has got great progress. With the expanding of mobile network, the repeater equipment has been put into use widely instead of base station. In order to meet the standard of the repeater, the testing task for the repeater will be very huge. At the same time the manual test is time-consuming and spends a lot of energy. In addition, the impact of human error causes inconsistencies in the test results absolutely and radiation from close range easily. Now for the quality of large-scale production, some of the domestic equipment manufacturers have designed and produced a number of pertinence but not perfect automated testing tools, which are difficult to carry on the overall test. These tools can neither meet the repeater standard nor are used in the test as a yard stick.According to the actual needs, the ultimate aim of putting forward this automatic test system is strictly in accordance with the requirements of the industry standard, to reform testing methods, to minimize the human error in the test progress and to improve the efficiency and quality of testing work. Using this automatic test system can help the equipment manufacturers continuously improve the design of their production and help the telecom carrier make a better selection for repeater to enhance the quality of the connection within its coverage area, optimize the network and make the network efficient. In addition, the system can also make the tester login and operate it with different permissions at the same time, and avoid the radiation from close range.In hardware design, the automatic test system has used the switch box which is researched and developed independently and made the selection of test instruments which have high performance-cost ratio from R&S Company, and other needed devices. This is the precondition of development of the automatic test system. According to the basic idea of modularization and hierarchical of the B/S structure, the software architecture of system is divided into user management module, device under test management module, calibration module, test plan management module, test plan execution module, test report generation module, test data management module and other functional modules. The software achieves remote operation of the instruments by using GPIB or Ethernet cable, VISA structural model and standard commands for programmable instruments (SCPI).In this paper, the design, structure and work processes of the GSM repeater automatic test system and the comparison between manual and automatic test are carried out in details. Now the GSM repeater automatic test system, which has high level of precision, accuracy, stability, flexible operation and other features, has been achieved completely. It is the first RF automatic test system based on B/S structure and has become the main testing tools for China mobile screening trunk amplifiers and repeaters.
