The Study Of Information-Centric Network Based On Sdn

With the rapid development of the Internet, the network as a whole is becoming more and more information-centric. Affected by the popularity of social networking service, cloud storage and content sharing, for most of the time the network works on accessing and disseminating of information. And according to Cisco’s forecast, the global IP traffic will reach966EB (1EB equals1,000,000TB) per year by2015, which implies that current network is facing a challenge on distributing large traffic of information. However, the traditional Internet is essentially using a location-oriented structure, which has natural shortcomings when dealing with information-centric network jobs.Information-centric network (short for ICN) is a network full centered on information, which focuses on the information disseminating, searching and transmitting instead of on the reachability between two hosts and maintaining the conversation of them. ICN does not require the user to know where the information locates before requesting it. And with name-based policy and in-network cache function, ICN can improve the network efficiency and robustness. So ICN is important for the current network which has to deal with plenty of information distribution work. On the other hand, SDN (Software-Defined Network) provides powerful abilities to program and dynamically manage the network. Many of the abilities can meet the needs of ICN, so it’s very significant to study the information-centric network based-on SDN.This paper, first of all, analyzed the main features of ICN, including several popular ICN models like CCN and PSIRP, and made a comparison between those models. After that the technique of SDN was discussed, including its features and how it can benefit the setup of the ICN model. Then this paper concluded the key points of several SDN-based ICN implementations.As one of the major work, in Chapter3, this paper discussed the designed ICN model based on SDN, short for ICN/SDN model, which included the design of the network structure, message, the way messages exchange, main components and the way those components work. This ICN/SDN model is designed on the basis of CCN model and provides three main features:contents identified by name, contents routed by name and in-network cache.As one of the major work, in Chapter4, this paper discussed the implemented simplified instance of the ICN/SDN model, which named ICN/SDN prototype. This prototype implementation is focused on the implementation of in-network cache feature, which also included the implementation of a simple messaging protocol named ICNP and the implementation of the main nodes and necessary features. During the implementing, the Scapy and Pyretic libraries were utilized. At the end of Chapter4, experiments were carried using the Mininet simulation platform and the results was evaluated.
