With the development and popularization of Bluetooth technology intelligent terminal, most intelligent devices have a Bluetooth function. Bluetooth is a wireless data communications open global specification, which establish a special connection to the fixed and mobile communication environments based on a low-cost short-range wireless connection. As an open, short-range wireless communication technology, Bluetooth can implement not only the wireless connection of virus intelligent devices, but also file transmission, voice communication. It has become a popular communication technology which is concerned about by people of the world. At the same time, many internet phone systems have shown its great value.As the wide application of Bluetooth and the significant value of voice communication systems, the research of multimedia communication system based on Bluetooth has a wide prospects and potential market value. It has an important practical significance.This paper analyzes the indoor multimedia transmission scheme, researches the technologies of audio compression, silence detection and double buffering. An algorithm of double buffering based on silence detection has been designed. This paper then designs and implements a real time multimedia communication system based on Bluetooth. Users in the Bluetooth signal coverage area can communicate with each other. For example, they can have a voice chat, video chat, send or receive files. The system comprises three parts:the server part, the gateway part, and the client part. The system has an advantage of low power consumption, using a Bluetooth gateway. But with the limitation of the transmission speed of Bluetooth, it should be done to analyze and compare the schemes to improve the real time features, and examinations should be performed to test the feasibility, in order to implement real time multimedia communication. Among them, the main technologies include audio and video compression, double buffering and silence detection technology. From the perspective of software engineering, the paper elaborated the framework, system analysis, design and testing, as well as real-time multimedia transmission technology’s implementation in the system.The multimedia communication system was finally designed and implemented, and schemes to improve real time feature of the system was tested, such as the double buffering scheme based on silence detection, comparisons of buffer size and packet size. The real time feature of this system was then effectively improved.
