In this thesis, the main objective is to research and implement the RTP/RTCP protocols that are used to transport real-time multimedia information via Internet. At the beginning, we analyze the demand of the transmission of real-time multimedia information on network and the capabilities and problems of the communication network that is used to transport real-time multimedia information. To deal with the problems, some new methods and new technologies were explained in detail, such as data compression, stream media technology, and network protocols. After that, the focus is put on the network protocols. Several network protocols, such as TCP, UDP, RTP/RTCP, are analyzed and contrasted thoroughly, and their concept and mechanism, their strengths and their flaws are also described clearly. By contrast, we found that the RTP protocol is very suitable for the transmission of the real-time data.Delay estimation and synchronization control are two important aspects of the real-time data transmission. In this thesis, we take RTP as transport protocol; these two concepts are also delved theoretically. Finally, a real-time audio conversation system over RTP/RTCP protocols is brought forward and illustrated. It is proved that the system used to transport audio is very effective over RTP/RTCP.
