With the evolution of time, empirical knowledge has increasingly become one of the most important resources for companies’ sustainable growth, and enterprise knowledge management has attracted numerous researchers’ attention. The accumulation and sharing of internal empirical knowledge is quite essential to company development, especially in the R&D (research and development) process. Some enterprises already manage and reuse that empirical knowledge by some methods, like documented lesson-learned knowledge in company local net hard disk. However, the reusing frequency is still not that high, and those documents are not searching-friendly. Therefore, building an effective empirical knowledge navigation and management system for the enterprise becomes a really urgent problem needing to be solved.This paper focuses on the design and implementation of empirical knowledge navigation system for the R&D process in WPT Company, which is based on the knowledge management and knowledge map theory, combined with the WPT’s requirements of empirical knowledge management. Knowledge map is the core of knowledge navigation system. Considering the characteristics of empirical knowledge, this paper introduces the construction of concept knowledge map and expert knowledge map. Through the knowledge map design methods, the visualization graphics engine will generate a concept knowledge map that show the connection among different concept, as well as an expert knowledge map that show the relations among engineers. Users can interact with the two kinds of knowledge map, so can they grasp the knowledge they want quickly and effectively. Through the use of empirical knowledge navigation system, users can accurately find and use domain knowledge in seconds, accurate locating domain experts and seek advice from them. Thereby it promotes knowledge reuse efficiency and meets enterprises’ daily needs, at the same time, contributes to the knowledge innovation in turn.
