Universal serial bus because of its ease to use and fast speed has been widely applied to peripheral device. The transmission speed of USB3.0is much faster than that of USB2.0. However the variety of USB3.0device is few today. With the scale of SoC chip constantly expanding, the power consumption is also increasing. Now, IC designers have focused on how to reduce the power consumption. To implement the chip for USB3.0device application, a low-power and configurable architecture of USB3.0device controller and a design of SoC-integration-oriented IP core were proposed. The controller is configurable on system buses, physical interfaces, endpoint properties, buffers and low-power strategies, aiming at improving the IP reusability. Clock gating and power gating are employed for low-power design. Clock gating is used to reduce the dynamic power consumption of idle logic while power gating is used to maximally reduce the static power consumption of controller in suspend mode. The hardware implementation of the controller illustrates the differences of the area cost under various architecture configurations. Experimental results show that, by using clock gating, the dynamic power consumption of the controller is reduced by50%in U0and it is also reduced effectively in U1/U2/U3; by using power gating, the total power consumption of the controller is reduced by95.5%in suspend mode.
