Virtual reality (abbreviated VR) is constructed like a simulation of the real world with using computer graphics. It simulates the three-dimensional scene which has good immersive and realism. It gives a person a variety of sensory stimulation of the virtual environment with using modern technology. The sensory stimuli includes vision, hearing and touch, and even the smell and taste. Virtual reality system mainly includes the creation of a virtual world and natural interactions between people and the virtual world. The good ability of man-machine interaction can make the virtual reality technology widely used in natural science, engineering, culture and art, film and television, medicine, military, archaeological and the recent emergence of new media art, etc. Visual simulation is the combination of computer technology, graphics technology, optical technology, control technology and other high-tech. It is through the real world or the virtual world of the human imagination for three-dimensional modeling and real-time drive, and then use helmet display or display three-dimensional projection technology. Visual simulation development foreground is very attractive. It is a development direction, which has a profound potential application of new technology. Virtual reality technology is essential in modeling, it is the foundation of realization of VR visual simulation, including geometric modeling, physical modeling and behavioral modeling. The quality of the authenticity has a big influence to create models of the virtual reality system.Tunnel boring machine (abbreviated TBM) is the integration of mechanical, electronic, hydraulic, laser technology, and it’s a large-scale factory tunnel construction work system. TBM has many advantages such as tunneling fast, short construction period, good working environment, the ecological environment friendly and high comprehensive benefit, and it is an important choice of tunnel construction methods both at home and abroad. Hard rock tunnel boring machine is mainly used in hard formation excavation, which is different with shield machine on the rock fragmentation mechanism. Shield machine uses blade excavation in soft soil and ensures that it is stable and to prevent ground subsidence. Hard rock tunnel boring machine uses hob to cut rock unceasingly, to groove depth increasing, and it leads to deepen and expand the rock surface crack between adjacent grooves of the spalling of rock and the process to complete the broken rock. Due to the particularity of TBM’s construction environment, we can’t go to the construction site to observe and understand its working condition, so we can get it through the creation of three-dimensional model of TBM, with using virtual reality modeling technology to build the scene which is close to the real environment of virtual scene construction, and simulates its working process. It is a good reference significance for the virtual reality technology which is introduced into the large engineering in the field of mechanical equipment.The main content of this paper is hard rock tunnel boring machine visual simulation in virtual reality environment. Being Φ5.75m hard rock tunnel boring machine as the research object, creating the key parts and components of three-dimensional model as a starting point in Pro/E, through the establishment of hard rock tunnel boring machine based on OpenFlight data format a geometric model library, we can realize the assembly of the machine in a virtual reality environment. We studied the problem of construction process of the movement part DOF nodes of Hard rock tunnel boring machine. Virtual reality modeling technology is used to establish the construction scenario of hard rock tunnel boring machine, and we synthetically used technology of material, lighting and texture to rich and perfect environment model. We built hard rock tunnel boring machine visual simulation environment based on visual simulation software Vega and realized the principle of work of hard rock tunnel boring machine in the virtual reality environment, eventually we can get stereo display effect on screen.
