The traditional water treatment process cannot reflect changes of waterquality timely because of low monitoring frequency and distributed measuringparameters, which makes it unable to meet the real-time requirements of waterquality management. The online monitoring instruments of drinking watertreatment process are first analyzed in this paper dissertation, and then the designand application of online data acquisition instrument is carried out. This researchhas important applied value to enhance drinking water quality management.Based on the integrative advantages of the touch screen and GPRS, anintegrated portable data acquisition instrument is developed, which is multi-inputchannel and low-cost. This data acquisition instrument can acquire a variety ofanalog signals, enabling online monitoring for pH, dissolved oxygen, conductivity,turbidity, temperature, pressure, flow, and other water quality parameters. Thesedata can be transmitted to remote monitoring center via a wireless network.Additionally, the wired network and associated parameter detecting interfaces areprovided to the users for selecting and expanding functions of other monitoringinstruments.The developing process of the data acquisition instrument can be divided intotwo parts: hardware and software. The hardware part includes the analog-to-digitalconversion module, human machine interface (HMI) and data transmission module,which aims to achieve signal conversion, data display, stora ge and transmission.The software part involves user interface, data processing, showing historicalcurve, alarming and data transmission, which enables the data processing,real-time display, storage, query, alarming and transmission. During the design ofhardware and software, reliability design is also considered to improve thestability and reliability of the data acquisition instrument.The field experiments show that the developed data acquisition instrumenthas advantages such as good generality, powerful functions, simple operation,good stability, and high performance-price ratio. Exactly, this instrument enablesmulti-channel signal acquisition, touch screen interface operation, real-time datadisplay and query as well as wireless network and cable transmission. The dataacquisition instrument has been deployed into actual industrial site and the application results show that it can meet user’s requirements.
