Study On The Performance And Intervention Measures Of Network Populism During The Transformation Period

As a complex social and political phenomenon, populism appears in a specific periodof social transition. China is in the period of social transition in the process of themodernization now. With the deeper degree of marketization, the new combination anddifferentiation have taken place in the pattern of social interests. This presents thedevelopment situation of the diversification of interests. And it leads to the serious socialcontradictions. People have a strong dissatisfaction on the social reality. In the traditionalmainstream media, authority and elite dominated, so there was almost no chance toexpress their voice of the masses. The emergence of the Internet changes the situation, thatthe voice is not equal between the masses and the authorities. It provides a perfectplatform to express themselves for the masses. Thus the populism extends from realisticsociety to the online virtual world and forms the network nationalism.This article first generally analyzes the populism. Because the populism is lack of auniformity of definition itself, the article elaborates the core elements, main characteristicsof populism and the source of the national populism. We understand what the populism isand where the nationalism comes from. Secondly, combining with the theory of populismand network populism, this article analyzes the performance of the network populism inour country during the transitional period. As a whole, the performance of Chinesetransition network populism has three styles. They are ethnic nationalism, democraticpopulism and cultural populism. Ethnic nationalism is the extreme form of nationalismwhich emphasizes patriotism; Democratic populism puts all kinds of social contradictionsin the period of social transition in China as the focus, pursuits social equity and justice,and criticizes social reality; Cultural populism resists and digests the authority and themainstream culture. These three performance styles have positive and rational aspects.They also have negative and irrational aspects. Again, this paper expounds the reasons andsocial influence of the transition network populism. The emergence of the networkpopulism is not an accident, it has profound reasons. The three performance styles ofnetwork populism create diverse patterns of network public opinion in network world. It causes certain influence to the real society. This kind of influence is twofold. We shoulddialectically treat the network populism. Finally, in view of the transition networkpopulism performance, intervention measures are proposed. These measures includeperfecting the interest coordination mechanism, improving the public opinion expressionmechanism, optimizing the network technology platform and innovating governmentmanagement mode.
