The Internet of Things (IoT) is an extension application of communicationnetwork and the Internet. It uses sensing technology and intelligent devicesperceiving and cognizing the physical world, interconnected networkscommunicating data, and enables computing and processing data, and miningknowledge. The Internet of things realizes information interaction and seamlesslylinks between peoples and things, and achieves real-time control of the physicalworld, the precise management and scientific decision-making purposes.The Internet of Things has a wide range of application in the city of intelligentlife, intelligent agriculture, financial intelligence, intelligent healthcare, intelligentenvironmental and energy, transport and logistics, municipal management, safety, andother areas. The communication networks play an important in these applications.Automatic Meter Reading (ARM) system is a typical example of IoT applications.This thesis takes ARM system as the research object. The study analyzes the statusand technical features of communication network resources that could be used inARM, and comes to the conclusion that Short Message Service (SMS) can be used asthe base communications platform for ARM system.The research work presented in this thesis analyzes SMS and its usage for datatransmission in ARM in detail, and as well as the China Mobile Internet SMSGateway Interface Protocol (CMPP protocol). Base on the.NET platform, adoptingSOCKET communications technology, multi-threaded processing, asynchronous calls,and information security encryption technology, design and implement a shortmessage service platform. This short massage service platform builds the bridge ofcommunications between terminals and services application in the ARM system. Inthe last part of the thesis, it describes the testing processes for the short messageservice platform with detailed descriptions of the test environment, test content andtest results. The results show that the short message service platform can worknormally completing data transmission in ARM system. This also shows that usingSMS as the mean of data communications in ARM system is feasible. The short message service platform has been deployed in the Automatic MeterReading system and formally put into production use with stable operation.
