The thesis started with a panoramic depiction by analyzing the background and businessstrategy of Linglong magazine, as well as its feature columns and the community of itseditorial staff, byliners and readers.Since its foundation, the magazine had been dedicated to be “the mouthpiece of women”and a flag-waver aimed at the liberation of women, until it ceased publication. The column “Women” and “Common Sense” provided guidance to women’s daily life;the “Mailbox” section offered advices about women’s mental health; the entertainmentcolumns added topics to the ladies’ dinner party conversation while the photographicsection helped broadening their horizons. Then, the thesis inspected from both sides the progress and limitations of Linglong. Theformer is mainly manifested in that it built a platform on which women could convey theiropinion towards relationship, family, education and vocation. At the same time, themagazine also exhibited female images to show the expansion of their social and physicalspace. However, the magazine still fell short in the expression of feminism. As it postedpictures of female body, the magazine got itself bogged down in the consumption offemale nudity inadvertently. In addition, the magazine was still subject to the patriarchal view of society when it cameto the establishment of women’s social relations, wobbling between “good wife” andcareer women, independence and dependence on men.The study found the magazine successful in feminism expression by encouraging womento choose their spouses freely and advocating for their education and vocation. Though itfailed to break the fence of patriarchal society bounded by the historical limitations, therole it played as a female magazine in the liberation of women was not shadowed.
