The “Glasnost” is a reform taken by Gorbachev to deal with the dilemma of Soviet politics andeconomic, in which mass media, especially newspapers played an significant role. However, themanagement as well as the content of newspapers gradully ran out of control during the glasnost, whichturned the newspapers an adverse element in the reform, as a result of which, the Communist Party of theSoviet Union was involved in a crisis of public opinion. It is of great theoretical and practical significanceto review and analysis the newspapers’ chaos in the reform.Besides the introduction, this thesis is divided into four parts, the main contents of each part are asfollows:The introduction mainly expounds the significance of this topic, research status and the writing ideasand innovations.Part1: Newspapers in the context of glasnost. This part studies the background and main content ofglasnost, reviews the plan and implementation of the reform of newspapers, analyzes the background ofnewspapers’ chaos including the social dilemma and the difficulties met in the news reform..Part2: The manifestation of newspapers’ chaos. The chaos can be mainly divided into three parts,which all interwinded and interacted with each other, including chaos of management, chaos of content,emergence of multiparty newspapers.Part3: The consequence and influence. This part mainly involves two points: the first one is theCommunist Party of Soviet Union lost the ability of manage the public opinion, leaving themselves into ahuge crisis of public opinion while the opposition seized the opportunity to publish various anti Communistspeeches; The second one is the crisis of the Soviet regime. Marxism, which was the the guiding theory ofSoviet was questioned, so as the legitimacy of the Communist Party. Meanwhile, the national crisis alsoemerged frequently back then.Part4: Lessons from newspapers’ chaos of Soviet. The chaos of newspapers, which played ansignificant role in the disintegration of the Soviet Union, could bring us some enlightenments: news reformshould adapt to the social development, the media should notice not only freedom but also social responsibility.
