With the rise of the internet of things, Wireless Sensor Networks as the connectionbetween specific physical and the internet, is becoming a hot research field. In many WirelessSensor Networks studies, the network layer protocol is undoubtedly a very importantdirection, the merits of network layer protocol directly affects the performance of the entirenetwork. In this paper, the Wireless Sensor Network is large-scale, the initial energy of nodesrandomly distributed within a certain range, the target of the study is to prolong the lifetime ofthe network as well as increasing the effective data transfer of network, and the network layerhierarchical routing protocol based on the ring network is studied.Firstly, this paper analyzes several classic network layer routing algorithm, asLEACH(Low Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy), SEP(Stable Election Protocol),EDCS(Efficient and dynamic clustering scheme) and so on. They are operated by networklanguage as well as verified their advantages and disadvantages of their real existence.Secondly, the ring network model is described and analyzed, including the structure ofring network, energy model and multi-level energy representation, meanwhile the targets to beachieved in this article are gave. Moreover, in the ring network model, the paper gives the way to determine theoptimum number of clusters in ring regions for minimizing the average energy consumption, the formation mechanism of cluster heads for prioritizing the use of multi-node residualenergy as cluster head and improved multi-hop routing. Finally, in a simulation environment, the paper gives the performance of the improvedhierarchical routing protocol in four indicators: life cycle, the energy consumption rate, thenumber of cluster heads in each round and the amount of data sent in the network.Experimental results show that the improved hierarchical routing protocol in medium-scale Wireless Sensor Networks and multi-level energy environment can effectively extend thelifetime of the network, balance energy consumption and achieve good data throughputamount.
